Catholic Germany and Austria Oktoberfest

DAY 1 –DEPARTURE FROM USA
Evening departure from USA to COLOGNE via MUNICH.  Dinner aloft.

DAY 2 –COLOGNE
Upon your arrival and after your passport control, a RENAISSANCE GROUP representative will meet you and transfer you to your hotel in COLOGNE.  The afternoon will include a walking tour of the Cathedral of Cologne, one of Europe’s largest and most impressive gothic cathedrals.  Its construction began in 1248 but was not completed until 1880, prompting the phrase “Ein Dom ist nicht complit,” meaning “A cathedral is never finished being built.”  Excavations indicate that a dome was built on two earlier churches, one dating to the first century AD.  There is a Roman-Germanic museum, virtually next door, which shows the extent of the Roman Empire.  A welcome cocktail reception will be offered at the hotel.  Dinner and overnight in your hotel.

DAY 3 –COLOGNE…KOBLENZ…RUDESHEKIM…
HEIDELBERG
After breakfast and Mass, your motorcoach will take you to KOBLENZ for a cruise from 3-to-5 hours along the Rhine River.  This is “castle country,” full of history of the robber barons.  Exit at RUDESHEKIM to enjoy lunch in this quaint wine-lover’s town. Travel 50 more miles to the city of HEIDELBERG, home of the Student Prince, with its 1-mile-long walking area of shopping, dining, and musical enjoyment.  Dinner and overnight in Heidelberg.

DAY 4 –HEIDELBERG
Mass in Heidelberg.  This morning your sightseeing will include the Castle of Heidelberg, a noble example of German Renaissance architecture.  The afternoon is at your leisure.  Dinner at a local restaurant to sample the local German cuisine.  Overnight in Heidelberg.

DAY  5 –HEIDELBERG… ROTHENBURG OB DER TAUBER …
DINKELSBUHL… NÖRDLINGEN…MUNICH
Your motorcoach will take you through the Romantische Strasse, the famous Roman artery which runs through the heart of Germany.  Today’s Mass will be celebrated in Heidelberg.  Your next stop will be 75 miles away in ROTHENBURG OB DER TAUBER which is the finest preserved of the medieval walled towns in central Europe.  There will be a walking tour of this city.  Continue on to DINKELSBÜHL, another quaint medieval town and to NÖRDLINGEN, ending in MUNICH. (Instead of Dinkelsbühl or Nördlingen it would be possible to make a stop at Freising to visit the cathedral were Benedict XVI received his ordination to priesthood together with his brother Georg).  Dinner in Europe’s most famous beer hall, the Hoffbrauhaus.  Overnight near Munich.   

DAY  6 –MUNICH…DACHAU…MUNICH
Sightseeing of the city of Munich, including important places in the life of Pope Benedict XVI. (e.g. Maximilians Gymnasium, Herzögliches Georgianum) and a stop at Dachau, sight of one of the Nazi concentration camps of WWII. Your afternoon will be free and transportation will be to the Oktoberfest festivities.

DAY 7 –MUNICH… OBERAMMERGAU…MUNICH
Tour of the Bavarian foothills of the Alps.  First stop is Neuschwanstein Castle, King Ludwig’s fairy tale castle which Walt Disney emulated at Disneyland.  After the visit to this castle, your motorcoach will take you to the Wieskirche, the “Church in the Meadow” which offers one of the finest examples of German Rococo beauty.  The trip continues on to OBERAMMERGAU, famous for its Passion Play staged once every decade.  Return to MUNICH.  The evening is free.  Overnight in your hotel.  Mass to be scheduled.

DAY 8 –MUNICH…ALTOTTING…MARTL AM INN…SALZBURG
The drive towards Austria includes a stop at ALTÖTTING, one of the most important pilgrimage places of Bavaria, and later at MARTL AM INN (birthplace of Pope Benedict XVI.).  Lunch is scheduled in this region. Then you will continue to the Konigssee were a motorboat will transfer you across the lake to St. Bartholoma to a small pilgrimage church, after which you will be transferred to Mozart’s SALZBURG.  Dinner and overnight in Salzburg.

DAY 9 –SALZBURG
After breakfast we will schedule Mass and then go on a morning sightseeing with a local expert who will take you through the historic center of Mozart’s hometown, admiring the exquisite Mirabell Gardens, the famous Horse Trough, the Great Festival Hall, St. Peter’s Churchyard, and the monumental Domplatz.  We will also visit the birthplace of the musical genius in charming Getreidegasse.

DAY 10 –SALZBURG…CHIMSEE…MUNICH
After breakfast and Mass while on your way to Munich, we will visit the summer residence of King Ludwig II located on a small island in the middle of Lake Chimsee.  We will then proceed to MUNICH.  This afternoon we will be free for last-minute shopping.  A Farewell Dinner will be scheduled.

DAY 11 –MUNICH…USA
This morning after Mass, we depart for the airport for your transatlantic flight back home where you will arrive on the same day.
