Southern Italy and Sicily

Day 1. Evening departure from USA, meals and refreshments served on board.

Day 2. PALERMO. Arrive in Palermo airport, where you will be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel, dinner at the hotel.

Day 3. PALERMO. A morning tour of this marvelous city features the Quattro Canti, a splendid example of Spanish Boroque architecture, the palace of the Normans and its superb Palentine Chapel, the Cathedral, and the famous Benedictine Abbey of Monreale. Here you will admire a XII century Cathedral, housing very fine mosaics representing a complete cycle of the old and the New Testament, and the Cloisters.  Balance of the day is free.  You might want to take an optional afternoon excursion to the beautiful fishing town of  Cefalu.  Your Renaissance Tour Director will be glad to make arrangements for you.  Dinner on your own and overnight in your hotel.

Day 4.     PALERMO, AGRIGENTO, TAORMINA, and (GIARDINI MAXOS).  Depart by motorcoach to beautiful Taormina, the driver will take you to the very heart of Sicily’s past, historic little towns like, Mislimeri, Villafrati, Lencara Friddi, Aragona, and Agrigento, which is one of the most beautifully situated towns in Sicily, and one of the island’s principal tourist attractions with its magnificent Valley of the Temples.  You will go on a guided tour of the Valley, including Temple of Castor and Pollux, Zeus, Concord and Hercules, as well as the Tomb of Theron and The Porta Aurea, continuing to Taormina.  Dinner at the hotel.

Day 5. TAORMINA  is one of the most attractive resorts in the Mediterranean .  Almond and orange tree blossom, adding a marvelous scent to a scene ranging from the snow capped Mount.Etna in one direction, to the metallic blue of the sea in the other.     
Lunch in a typical restaurant.  Dinner on your own and overnight in your hotel.

Day 6.     TAORMINA and CATANZARO. Depart by motorcoach to Catanzaro and spend the night in the  capital of the Calabria region. Spend the rest of the day at your leisure in this coastal city which offers a beautiful park called the Villa Trieste and a Provincial Museum, housing outstanding relics from the Neolithic period to the Greek - Roman age, and a remarkable collection of antique coins. Dinner and overnight in your hotel.

Day 7.     After breakfast, early departure to SORRENTO, arriving in time for lunch in a local restaurant. Shopping, strolling and an Italian ice cream are your priorities for the afternoon. Dine on your own in this chaming, romantic city overlooking the rainbow sunset on the sea.    

Day 8. SORRENTO and  POMPEI. Enjoy a guided tour of Pompei, an ancient city covered by volcanic lava 2000 years ago, and visit the remarkably preserved ruins of temples, houses and public buildings.  Your evening is free to spend at your leisure in Sorrento, the famous resort town of orange and lemon groves. You can take an optional excursion to Capri, a beautiful island resort, which is only a quick 15 minute ride away by hydrofoil.  Dinner and overnight in hotel.

Day 9.     SORRENTO, LENOLA, AND ROME.  Depart Sorrento and enjoy a breathtaking drive along the Almalfi Coast. Before continuing to Rome stop in the small early medieval town of Lenola, where you will enjoy a lunch of rustic central Italian cuisine at the restaurant Il Pozzi. Dinner on your own, overnight at hotel in Rome.

Day 10. ROME.  Your morning tour will highlight the ancient and modern aspects of  this cosmopolitan city…which make this vibrant city so remarkably unequal. The high spirited Roman citizens blend perfectly into the ancient backdrop where emperors once walked.  Drive past the monument to Vittorio Emanuele in Piazza Venezia, the Roman Forum, and stop at the Colosseum, a testament to Rome’s past greatness.  Continue to the Arch of Constantine, Circus Maximus, the Synagogue, Isola Tiberina, and Castel Sant’ Angelo.  Your last stop is St. Peter’s Basilica, the largest church in the Christian world, built over the tomb of St. Peter.  Spend the rest of the day at your leisure and have dinner at a popular Roman restaurant. Overnight at your hotel in Rome.

Day 11. ROME and VATICAN CITY. Enjoy a guided tour of the famous Vatican Museums, the   home of the priceless paintings and sculptures from the renown artists of the Renaissance era, among the breathtaking architecture and sights of the locale.  Spend the late afternoon at your leisure before being accompanied by motor coach to a local restaurant to enjoy typical Roman cuisine in the Old Rome, TRASTEVERE for your farewell dinner.  In the evening, bid “addio” to your travel companions during a festive farewell dinner with delectable cuisine and lots of  wine in a fashionable restaurant.

Day 12. ROME FCO. Morning departure by motorcoach to Fiumicino Airport for your
